Daumantas Patamsis is a Lithuania-born, Scotland-based graduate from the Mackintosh School of Architecture with a Diploma in Architecture in 2023. The Architects’ Company awarded him a Master’s Award for Outstanding Student Achievement 2023 for his final year design thesis Art Factory.

In his work, Patamsis reimagines the way we interact with cultural institutions. His designs start to unravel the age-old conventions that have built our galleries, museums and art schools, in order to deconstruct the romanticised image of the ‘isolated genius’ archetype. He proposes a modular system that rethinks the concept of a ‘studio’ as a space of production, exhibition, exchange of knowledge and public engagement. These building blocks can be dismantled and dispersed throughout urban and rural contexts, creating new ways of engaging with finished and unfinished art, as well as creating learning spaces for different cultural exchanges, technical skills and philosophies. This in turn could help break down art as an elitist field and unveil the process of creating art to the public.
