These copper patinated works are part of a body of on-going research into maps, metrics and the elemental conditions of colour. I understand this in the colouring of metals, as they change state via temperature and atmospheric exposure, and also in the telling of the age of stars by the colour they emit in relation to the process of fusion occurring at their very core - whilst the time of a clear sky may be read as it erupts in a sequence of hues at dawn and dusk. The development of human-made metrics becomes our coordinates for understanding, as does the immeasurable nature of our intuition.
Lily Krempel (b. 1998) completed a foundation diploma at Kingston School of Art in 2018 and graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2022 with a First Class BA Honours degree in Sculpture and Environmental Art. She was awarded the Steven Campbell Hunt Medal by Carol Campbell in 2022 and was a recipient of the RSA John Kinross Scholarship based in Florence, Italy, in 2022. After graduating, Lily worked as a prop-maker for Lucasfilm, assisted artist Julie Brook and now works as a studio assistant at the Glasgow School of Art.
